Mineral Oil Extreme Computer Cooling

Posted by admin

You have heard of liquid cooling for computers or even game consoles. It usually consists of cooling a heat sink with water instead if fresh air – just like a car engine. This photo shows a PC totally immersed in mineral oil to let the oil absorb the heat and cool the components. This is not the first time that someone uses an oil bath to cool a computer, but this attempt looks better than the one that we mentioned last year. Video in the full post.

Samsung have announced their 2008 HDTV lineup, and right at the very top of their LCD HDTVs are the Samsung 7 Series LCD, or 750 LCDs. The 7 Series models are very similar to the also recently announced Samsung 6 series LCDs, with a few extra enhancements and features. The top of the line Samsung 750 models come in three different screen sizes, the 40-inch LN40A750T, 46-inch LN46A750T, and the 52-inch LN52A750T.

As I mentioned earlier the series 7 LCDs are technically very similar to the series 6 LCDs, but with the addition of a side mounted USB 2.0 port allowing users to connected up compatible devices and using the screen as a large home viewing gallery for JPEG photos and also MPEG video files. Additionally the Samsung 7 series has an inbuilt 1GB flash memory, which is loaded with premium content to enjoy, such as HD artwork, recipes, children’s entertainment and more.

The Samsung 750’s have a great design blending color with a black piano gloss finish, and offers the very best in image quality with Samsung’s Super Patterned Vertical Alignment (SPVA) LCD panel offering a high 178 degree viewing angle, and reduces glare. The LCD panel is of a full 1080p HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) for the highest HD format, and features 120Hz Auto Motion Plus to keep images smooth and judder free, along with a very fast 4ms response time for sharp images.

Another feature of the Samsung series 7 LCD is it’s inbuilt Ethernet connectivity which allows interactive content and information to be directly displayed on the screen, such as up-to-the-minute access to weather, news, sports and stock information. The HDTV is also designed to be the entertainment hub in your home, allowing you to connect, access and manage other media devices such as MP3 players, camcorders and computers.

All four sizes will be available in March 2008.

Nice job Alienware, you did very well launching a sweet system around the same time as Apple’s launch of the ridiculously named Mac Book Air. Normally your releases would attract such fanfare it is not funny, but then there was no element of surprise this time. We had known for well over a month that your latest power gaming notebook was on the way. We even knew what it would be packing under the hood. Still, you could have drummed up a bit more publicity, had you brought this out a little earlier.

The stats of this gaming bad boy, according to the press release are as follows:

• Intel Core 2 Extreme mobile processor power, enabling users to run the latest games and power-hungry applications like post-production video software and music encoding programs at full speed for optimum productivity.

• Cutting-edge graphics delivered by an NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX GPU, fully primed for the new wave of DirectX® 10-fueled games.

• Alienware’s BinaryGFX technology, which provides the flexibility of switching between integrated and high-performance graphics cards.

• Advanced user controls through the Alienware Command Center, including the AlienFX® lighting and the AlienFusion power management system.

• Smart Bay technology giving users on-the-fly customization capabilities with a hot-swappable optical drive, second hard drive and backup battery.

This is one hot gaming notebook, it is just a shame that they mistimed its release so unbelievably badly. The Mac Book Air nearly had me singing its praises until I saw that a superior product was on the market in the form of the Area-51 m15x 15.4-inch notebook. I don’t need thinness, I need gaming juice and this thing has it in spades. Plus that alien head with the glowing eyes is a far cooler logo than a half eaten piece of fruit.

Priced to move between $1,500 and $2,700 (for our money, the mid-ranged $2,100 machine looked the pick of the bunch).

space invaders jacket: wrapped up in aliens

Posted by admin

Here’s a true fashion statement for the videogame lover who has it all. Going all out with the retro look, this jacket is emblazoned with hundreds of pixelated little alien dudes from the arcade classic, Space Invaders.

Designed by Scandanavian design mavens Junk de Luxe, the shiny synthetic look kind of reminds me of those cheezy old Members Only jackets, only further reinforcing the 1980s theme.

Unfortunately, the only place I can find these is from Trendlovers in Denmark. So unless you happen speak Danish, you may be out of luck. If you absolutely must be kept warm by aliens this winter, you can always pick up a toasty Space Invaders scarf.

Steve Jobs Denies That Chine iPhone Talks Halted

Posted by admin

Recently, there was news that the talks between China Mobile and Apple had stopped. It is unlikely that anyone thought that the deal was cancelled altogether, but that it was a “pause” because both parties could not reach an agreement.

Anyhow, Steve jobs confirmed that negotiations are still going on and that Apple is still interested. Apple surely is and Mobile China is also very interested, but it feels that it has the upper-hand in the negotiations. Unlike wireless carriers in the west who stomp each other to get Apple’s phone, I imagine that China mobile saying: “How badly do you want my 350M customers?”

Darkest Material Ever Is Almost Blacker Than Karl Rove’s Soul [That’s Pretty Dark]

Posted by admin

Is there anything you can’t do with the wonderful stuff that is nanotubes? A scientist at Rice University has created the world’s darkest material ever with pure carbon nanotubes, reflecting only .045 percent of all light shined on it. To put that in perspective, it’s 100 times darker than the paint on a black Corvette, or roughly 27 percent as dark as the viscous substance running through Karl Rove’s veins. But this stuff is useful, since its ridiculous light absorption would be great for solar panels. [Houston Chronicle via MAKE]

The 150 mpg Extreme Hybrid SUV - rocket scientists aim to revolutionize hybrid vehicles

Posted by admin

A collaboration between a bunch of rocket scientists and car engineers at AFS Trinity Power in California has resulted in a new technology called Fast Energy Storage which will apparently improve the performance and durability of conventional hybrid cars at a relatively low cost.

The idea is to install an Extreme Hybrid drivetrain consisting of a set of ultra-capacitors hooked up to a sophisticated computer control system which will make better use of the batteries in a traditional hybrid set up. The result is conventional style acceleration and performance coupled with improved electrical range and battery life. Sounds cool, eh?

The Extreme Hybrid vehicle differs from today’s popular hybrids in several ways. The most important are the increased capacity of the battery, the ability to recharge the battery from the electric power grid, and, equally important, the presence of a second Fast Energy Storage component that enables rapid acceleration and greater regenerative braking capability. The Extreme Hybrid requires the seamless transfer of power between a number of different devices, including traction motors, generator, charging system, and ancillary loads.

Microsoft Vista Plus! Pack in the works?

Posted by admin

Posted Jan 16th 2008 5:43AM by Thomas Ricker
If the idea of a $40 Plus! Pack gets your Vista-loin in a sweat then listen up. It appears that Microsoft might be launching a Microsoft Plus! Pack on February 15th. This according to that box art above discovered on the Canadian Future Shop site. However, the text found describing the Plus Pack appears to be describing Vista Ultimate which makes the whole thing a tad, shall we say, suspect. Hey, who needs Vista Ultimate Extras anyway when you can have “4 Games in one!”?
