This could be the first video footage of Windows 7

Filed under: Desktops, LaptopsObviously a lot of people cried fake when those screenshots purporting to show Windows 7 Ultimate popped up — possibly because they looked a lot like rebadged Vista screens — so the blogger who originally posted the images has followed up with a video for proof. And we do have to say, if this is fake, someone put a hell of a lot of work into pulling it off, from creating a new bootup screen to hacking the source code to adding fresh Media Center options. ThinkNext tells us that this release — known as Milestone 1 — expires in May of this year, although if Redmond and its team of crack Enemy of the State-types have anything to say about it, this particular blog will not be getting another preview copy next time around. Kinetic Energy Camera Concept

This is an interesting concept for a flying gadget: by rubbing the device between your hands, you provide enough energy for it to fly and to capture photos during the flight.

Useless but neat, huh?

Fujitsu Lifebook P8010

Thin is in, and it doesn’t just apply to supermodels and cell phones but notebooks as well. Fujitsu’s latest Lifebook, the P8010 might not be as anorexic as the MacBook Air, but at least it packs in a fair bit of features including :-

  • Three USB 2.0 ports
  • WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity
  • 80GB hard drive
  • 4GB RAM (max)
  • SL7100 VL processor (don’t ask)
  • Integrated graphics chipset

This 2.69 pounder is now under the FCC’s scrutiny, so it should be a matter of time before you manage to grab hold of it. Hopefully its battery will be easily replaceable.

LawnBott LB3500 offers Bluetooth control, stylin’ rims

Filed under: Household, Robots iRobot may own the market for autonomous indoor cleaning devices, but when it comes to taming that wild jungle you call a backyard, the new king of the hill may well be the LawnBott LB3500. This fourth-generation LawnBott from Kyodo America improves upon its predecessors in nearly every category: even though it weighs ten pounds less than the entry-level LB2000, it offers up a greater coverage area, increased cutting width, greatly improved incline climbing capability, longer runtime, and best of all, a Bluetooth radio for programming or direct control by cellphone. Of course, all these high-end features don’t come cheap, and when the LB3500 does come to market (date: unknown), we imagine that it’s gonna cost a good deal more than the current high-end, $2,500 LB3200. Check out the gallery below for some more angles.

Google opens its vast video library to YouTube for Mobile

Posted by admin

Even though a YouTube service has been available on certain mobile phones since 2006, the range of videos on offer has been limited to thousands rather than the millions on the main YouTube website. All that is about to change, however, as Google expands YouTube for Mobile to match the Web version.

Those phones able to access YouTube for Mobile should not only start seeing a lot more videos being made available, but also will get access to some new features. These included being able to rate videos and share the clips with your mobile friends. Google is also working to make uploading of new videos to YouTube from your mobile a simple task, effectively allowing a “complete” YouTube video service on your phone.

Hunter Walk, product manager at YouTube, says the move to expand YouTube on mobile platforms is currently just to get people used to the idea of it. The company wants mobile phone users to become accustomed to sharing and viewing video on their phone. Eventually there are plans to start making money off the service by also displaying ads.

Read more at the Associated Press article.

Matthew’s Opinion

It’s great news that Google is expanding its mobile offerings through YouTube, and it is probably the right time to do this. Mobile phone data tariffs are still very expensive, so the demand for the service isn’t going to be very high. Eventually, as these tariffs come down, usage will go up, and by doing the groundwork now, YouTube for Mobile should be able to cope with demand.

Adding ads to this mobile service is difficult to do right now. Standard Web connections allow users a significant, or unlimited amount of bandwidth, so loading ads on a page isn’t an issue. When you are paying for the data you download to a mobile phone, you won’t appreciate the advertisement that just popped up on the screen. Again, this is something for the future, and Google has realized this.

P-Per Cellphone Concept is too Perfect to be True [Concepts]

Posted by admin

Those fellows at the Chocolate Design Agency have come up with another smashing concept. This time they have gone to work on creating the best phone, ever. The design is modeled around the same E-Paper Slap Bracelet we saw earlier, but this time the e-paper system—four layers of sustainable material, and an Organic Radical battery—is put to use in the P-Per cellphone concept, which shows a transparent display for camera mode and a browser that spans the entire surface of the display. Checkout the video to see what all the fuss is about.

Frankly, it looks better than anything we have ever seen. It looks better than the iPhone. It looks better than a Vertu. Hell, it even looks better than a lovechild that resulted due to an illicit relationship between an iPhone and a Vertu, which subsequently underwent plastic surgery to work out any gold-clad imperfections. We want. [Swongled]

Sony Reduces Blu-ray Lasers’ Size and Cost [Blu-Ray]

Posted by admin

With Blu-ray destroying the competition, the availability of cheaper units is going to be a big part in the future success of the format. That is why Sony’s recent success in shrinking the basic Blu-ray reader/writer module is a turn for the better. The new modules will pave the way for thinner drive bays and cheaper players.

The units are only 3mm thick, and Sony is confident that the smaller size will allow Blu-ray functionality to become mainstream in standard 9.5mm laptop drives. Sony are further hoping that this move towards greater ubiquity is secured by the end of this year.

The cost effectiveness will be due to a simpler manufacturing process, and the 3mm modules will also be able to read dual layered BDs with organic dye in the recording layers. Such discs can be produced from traditional DVD production lines, again driving down the costs. Sure, this may all sound like great news, but do you not recall the movies, people? The hardships that were faced by a tiny Thomas Brown still bring a tear to my eye. [Tech.co.uk]
